No need to worry, You can easily choose the seo person/company. Go to one good search engine type seo services pick 3 or 4 top companies then ask them at least 3 sites they have worked on that are currently in the top 5 on top search engines.
Then ask how long will give the keyword rankings, page rank, alexa rank etc.and .you can tell them your gole ( keyword ranking in top into on niche web market) then you can visit them website stuff.
Note: new companies also give the good results if it has real time experience

Their are a lot of SEO companies on the net that worry me to be honest.
Most that i have talked to either take forever to optimise your website, or they charge you an ongoing fee.
My advice would be to find a company like mine that provides very affordable website SEO services. My brother and I started this up a few years ago for the above reasons, we now are ticking over nicely and have many happy customers.
We operate near Chelmsford and Colchester in Essex, we can cover London, UK and the rest of the world.

I feel that hiring an SEO company is bit risky as there are so many companies pretending to be no.1 and assuring you for top ranking. As a matter of fact 98% of them are not able to provide quality services but only charge you money.
It will be better if you will hire two or three trainees and one senior SEO to guide them and let them work under your supervision. This way you can monitor their work and get the best output at cheaper cost.

Searching a good SEO firm is a tough task as lot of companies gives you false expectations. The first rule to remember is that no body can guarantee you 1st page Google position. The position comes from consistent legitimate work.
Follow the following checklist while selecting SEO firm:
- Be clear with your goal and tell the bidding company what you expect.
- Ask them for any similar projects which they have done and also look out for other projects which they have done.
- Ask them for keywords which they have optimized. Check their rankings in Search Engines by yourself.
- Ask them to give references and verify that by calling references.
- Search on internet for company’s reviews or complaints. Many people when they are happy or not satisfied leave review regarding companies. You can search for company name reviews in Google.
- Don’t all money in advance. Pay in between 10% to 25% and pay rest in installments on results basis. In this way you will see output and then you will pay money.
- There are many freelance websites like Odesk where in you pay on per hour basis and you can also review the work done within the hour for which you have paid. You can try that. You can end the assignment at any point of time.
