I"m talking about trying to rank for really general terms that are highly competitive… are link directories worth it?

For really general terms, I’m going to say it’s probably your linking strategy.

I’ll give you a golden secret here, but this’ll help you considerably if you take the time & effort to implement it.

Find out who your top competitors are and analyze them. Their on-page optimization efforts, and their linking strategies.

And type in the URL of the pages of the top 5 or top 10 and look into your competition’s inbound links - where they’re located on the page, the topical relevance of the site that is linking to your competition and the anchor text used to link to your competition. You can determine if they’re paid links (or somehow incentivized, not just cash money) or if they’re natural.

Now, to break this down and understand their linking strategies, you’ll have to have a good understanding of link building & seo yourself, but it’s a good way to help you determine a linking strategy that will likely help you achieve your goals if you’ll follow through with it.

This doesn’t work in all cases, and it’s not a perfect plan - but it gives you some very valuable information on your competition & what they’re doing regarding their link building strategies.

I would suggest you to check in some web master forums. Do not just jump on to conclusions. Ask for references to see if they have strong knowledge plus experience. Take all contacts physical address to on-line forum references. Just in case if they are wrong guys you can sue or intimate in those forums which will ban such people. (search for some examples in Google)

If you know any programming languages (php, mySQL, html, etc) you could become a member of elance.com, phpjobs.com, etc. You basically post your resume to these sites and people offer you jobs to do work for them.

I’m looking for the best search engine out there. I don’t want Google because it started filtering search entries out using some Chiller thing. This can’t be fixed with SafeSearch. Does anyone know of a really good search engine that doesn’t filter anything out?

Actually at the end of search results in the google , google you can find an option there..
" repeat the search with the omitted results included."
If you click on that, you will get the results without any filtration.
If you still want to use any other search engine other than google, then
yahoo, msn, altavista are all there.

Just like google annalytic that provides ranking of a website and daily/monthly progress report in terms of traffic/visitors to the site; what are other tools available so that I would be able to track the traffic????

There are a few good seo analysis tools out there for checking your rankings. Some are free, some are not.

however, google analytics and regular analytic software can be used to monitor your SEO performance. Look over time from when you started optimizing the site to now. Is there an increase in daily traffic? What keywords are people using to find your site? Are they coming from the search engines or from referrals?

Monitoring your back links also is a good performance metric.
domain-pop.com is decent but there are a lot out there as well.

Everytime I type a search into yahoo, I get an error message saying the page cannot be retrieved. Google appears to work fine, but I prefer to use yahoo as my search engine. What’s the matter?

This could just be a network problem. I’d suggest you try using something like Clusty - this uses Yahoo AND Google And other engines altogether.

We use flash to output our website. Yet search engine optimization is an issue.

We’re thinking of creating websites that use HTML for the top section (Text in HTML codes so that search engines identify the site) but putting the rest of the site in FLASH at the bottom. Or is there a better way that doesn’t require a Flash master?

Flash doesn’t help at all for optimization. if you need it please use it sparingly. rather concentrate on interesting content. at the end of the day both human and bot visitors will visit more frequently if you have interesting content. have you ever thought of a blog?
